There are 3 phases in any surgical experience – Pre-operative, Intraoperative and Postoperative. We majorly focus on the first two phases but forget that the third phrase is as critical as the first two for a successful surgery. In fact, in the first two stages there are doctors and nurses with you to take care of you. But, during the postoperative phase you have to take care of yourself by following the guidelines of the doctor strictly.
DO’S AFTER A SPINE SURGERY :
Do Physical Therapy
One of the crucial steps to a successful recovery is Physiotherapy. It is highly recommended and considered a must after the surgery. Pay careful attention to the Physical therapist’s instructions and carry out activities as per his advice. This will save you from putting your spine in positions that can harm you in the longer run and the amount of pain you suffer from.
2. Do Watch for Infection
With any surgery chances of an infection are high, compared to normal body state, and it is important that you take serious care. Signs like redness, fever, swelling, or drainage at the incision site are signs of infections and better consult your doctor soon if you notice any such alarming sign. However, by keeping the incision clean and dry and taking prescribed medications, you can protect yourself from infections of any kind.
3. Do Control your Sugar Levels
There is a need for extra care by diabetic patients around the time of surgery and during recovery. High blood sugar levels can affect the healing process overall and wound healing and this can result in a serious issue. But ensure that it does not fall too low, as even that can cause serious problems.
4. Do Wear a Brace
Doctor’s suggest wearing a brace post surgery as it helps tremendously in your recovery. Wearing it specifically when you are sitting or walking has great results. It helps in stabilising the back.
5. Do Move Regularly
We have a general notion that we need to completely rest after a surgery or so. But this is not true. You need to keep your body moving and do activities that are not too stressful. This will result in better blood circulation, which helps the body to heal quicker. However, don’t do it excessively and make sure you are getting a good amount of sleep and rest.
DON’TS AFTER A SPINE SURGERY :
1.Don’t Rush
Oftentimes we fail at having sufficient rest and are eager to continue with our regular activities. As soon as we feel good, irrespective of doctor’s instructions we start with the routine we followed before surgery. This can have an impact on the recovery and cause damage that may last forever. So, better follow your doctor’s advice and make sure you dont rush.
2. Don’t Overdo It
Excess of anything is poisonous. Keep a track of your physical activities and how longer you do it. Even at the physiotherapy centers and at home, make sure you don’t put an excess amount of effort into activities. At physiotherapy centers, there will still be regulators keeping a check on you, but take special care at home.
3. Don’t Lift or Bend
One of the most important things you need to take care about is not lifting heavy objects, as this can have a toll on your body. Another thing to draw attention to is the way you bend. Ensure you don’t bend at your waist, instead bend at your knees or squat while picking objects placed below.
4. Don’t Smoke
Smoking cigarettes or using other tobacco products interferes with the healing process of bone and tissues. This may also invite wound infections and more surgeries.
5. Don’t Ignore Doctor’s Instructions
Most common reason behind unsuccessful surgeries all over the world is that we don’t follow doctor’s instructions and miss out on taking prescribed medications as per their advice. Also, in times of trouble or pain, we wait for a day or two, and then consult the doctor, which can turn out to be extremely dangerous.
